The assignment was to create a still life drawing using only contour and line weight. It was hard to resist filling in the dark areas (I kind of love the charcoal sticks that were part of the materials kit) but I valiantly stuck to the brief.

After Youngest Child moved out, we decided to reclaim the main bathroom as Adult Space and wanted to add something aesthetically pleasing to an otherwise painfully dated room (who doesn’t love a purple bathtub?). We found the bottle at an antique store and the fish at a funky little housewares shop across the river. The black sand is from Cape Disappointment (which has never lived up to its name) and the rocks are from the Oregon Coast. About 9 months after we set it up, the little green plant appeared. No idea what it is (Biologist Child’s best guess was “some sort of algae, maybe?”, so we definitely got our money’s worth with her degree) but it seems happy enough.
